PTA to Introduce a System to Block Illegal & Stolen Phones

Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) is going to introduce a new system called Device Identification, Registration and Blocking System (DIRBS) in order to block the illegal illegal, smuggled and stolen mobile phones in Pakistan very soon. This fundamental initiative has been taken in the line of Telecom Policy 2015, Section 9.6.1-9.6.4.

The Device Identification, Registration and Blocking System (DIRBS) will no doubt enhance the revenue of Government by allowing mobile phones that are imported through legal channel. The system will also not only monitor mobile phones that are being brought in Pakistan in near future but will also check the installed base of phones that are currently active or being sold in the channel.

The DIRBS would also help the blockade of snatched and stolen phones, in case their International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) numbers are reported to the concerned or relevant bodies.

According to Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), DRIBS which would act to operate as centralized equipment identity register to discourage influx of mobile handsets and tablets imported through grey channel at cost of public safety and tax revenue to national kitty.

The PTA will maintain a list of allowed IMEIs imported legally that can be allowed to work on local networks. All other IMEIs, called blacklisted phones/tablets will not be able to get registered with cellular networks.

The introduction of this system will of course positively impact the performance of entire mobile industry. PTA has also uploaded the Consultation Document on official website.
