According to the latest annual report issued by Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), 393.1 billion SMS were exchanged over cellular networks during FY2014-15. Average message sent by each user per month during 2014-15 also amplified to 187, up from 180 average SMS per user every month during 2013-14.

PTA regulates the telecommunication sector of Pakistan with pursuing balance between guarding consumer rights and authentic business benefits of the operators. It also played its role in the ‘National Action Plan’ to combat terrorism by planning, executing and monitoring the task of biometric re-verification of SIMs. 215.4 million SIMs were re-verified under this initiative, out of which 114.9 million SIMs against 44.7 million Computerized National Identity Cards (CNICs) were recognized to have correct antecedents, while 98.3 million SIMs were blocked because their antecedents were not available or could not be verified.
During the FY2014-15 telecom investment reached US$ 951 million whereas FDI inflow stayed US$ 908 million as operators sustained investment in encompassing the coverage of 3G and 4G services all over Pakistan.
The telecom import burden has steadily augmented over the last five years due to the fast growth of mobile broadband networks and adoption of smartphones in the society. In the FY 2014-15, Pakistan imported US$ 1.2 billion worth of telecom equipment.
At present almost 31% of the cellular mobile handsets imported in Pakistan are smartphones, which were only about 7% in 2012. Government is motivating foreign investment and has declared fiscal enticements for manufacturing and assembly of telecom equipment.
Broadband sector is undergoing a true upheaval since the introduction of mobile broadband. Broadband penetration increased to 8.97% at the end of FY 2014-15 as compared to only 2.07% in the preceding year. Mobile broadband has whole control on the broadband technology share as almost 80% subscribers are using 3G and 4G LTE services to access the internet.
