5G Trials Approved in Gilgit-Baltistan: A Step Toward Digital Transformation

The path for introducing 5G technology in Gilgit-Baltistan has been officially cleared, marking a significant milestone in the region’s digital development. The federal government has approved the launch of 5G trials in Gilgit-Baltistan, opening the door for next-generation connectivity in this strategically important area.
The approval follows a comprehensive review process. A summary submitted by the Gilgit-Baltistan Secretariat received clearance from both the Ministry of Law and the Ministry of Information Technology. Subsequently, the Gilgit-Baltistan Council endorsed the proposal through a circulation summary, after which the Governor formally ratified it.

Ghulam Abbas, the region’s Minister for Information Technology, played a pivotal role in securing this approval. He actively engaged with key federal stakeholders, including Shaza Fatima Khawaja and the Chairman of the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority, to push the initiative forward.
With the approval now in place, telecom companies will be able to commence 5G trials in the region. This development will significantly enhance digital connectivity, enabling faster communication and improved internet services.
According to Minister Ghulam Abbas, the introduction of 5G will not only strengthen digital infrastructure but also accelerate growth in key sectors. Tourism—a vital component of the region’s economy—is likely to benefit from improved connectivity, making it easier for visitors to access information and services. Additionally, it will expand the business activities and commercial communication, contributing to overall economic progress.
