AJK Govt Decides to Suspend Cellular & Internet Services Amid Protests

Recently, violent protests have erupted in the region of Azad Jammu & Kashmir (AJK) over the increases in power tariffs, flour prices, and perks given to the elite. In response, the AJK government according to a report has decided to suspend cellular and internet services for two days.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has also convened a meeting today to discuss the situation in AJK. The meeting will be attended by the Prime Minister of AJK along with other relevant stakeholders.

Moreover, the sources also said that after negotiations took place between the Joint People’s Action Committee and the Azad Kashmir government, however, they were unsuccessful. Afterward, the convoy of protesters departed for the capital of AJK, Muzaffarabad.

It is pertinent to mention here that protests have been ongoing in the region for the past three days. Also, there were clashes reported between police and protesters in the last couple of days resulting in one policeman’s death and multiple injuries.

The sources said that over 150 protesters were reportedly detained, with Rangers called in on Sunday. However, later, they were sent back as the AJK government tried to negotiate with protestors on the third day of the demonstrations. President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz have asked for restraint and resolution of issues through dialogue.
