Are Feature Phones the Future of Safer Tech?

In a world dominated by ever-evolving smartphones, the unassuming brick-like feature phones are making an unlikely comeback. Once overpowered by the tech giants Apple and Samsung, these retro devices are now finding a niche audience, driven by growing concerns over social mediaโ€™s impact on mental health.

The shift is particularly enunciated among parents who see these simpler phones as a shelter from the addictive apps that dominate modern smartphones. A 2023 U.S. poll disclosed that 67% of parents ranked excessive device use as their top health concern for their children. This sentiment is echoed globally, with schools and governments taking a stand against smartphone overuse. Policies limiting smartphone access in schools have already been introduced in one of seven countries. Moreover, Australia also implemented a law restricting social media use to those over 16.

Sales of feature phones in the UK jumped to 450,000 units in 2024, up from 400,000 the previous year. On the other hand, western Europe witnessed a 4% increase, with total sales reaching 215 million units. These numbers may seem small compared to the smartphone market but underscore a growing countercurrent fueled by safety concerns and digital fatigue.

Will Feature Phones Make A Comeback?

The revival of feature phones presents a unique challenge to Apple and Samsung. The tech giants have long flourished in delivering cutting-edge technology, but their dependence on smartphones, which generate significant portions of their revenue, makes them vulnerable to shifting consumer sentiment. As competition from brands like Xiaomi strengthens, the prospect of a new, mindful generation sidestepping smartphones entirely could cause trouble. There are now two options for the tech leaders. They can either defend their products or innovate by creating age-appropriate, simplified devices. Parental control apps exist but they are often clunky to configure, leaving room for a more straightforward solution.

Feature phones offer peace of mind in this hyperconnected world which smartphones canโ€™t. The humble brick phone is not just an antique, itโ€™s rather a beacon for a healthier, less intrusive digital future. However, I donโ€™t think that smartphone titans will ditch innovative cutting-edge devices for simpler phones. These smartphones generate noteworthy portions of their revenue so, it would be very difficult to sidestep them, just for customer satisfaction.
