Bill Gates Met PM Nawaz Sharif to Discuss Progress on Polio Eradication

Mr.Bill Gates, Chairman of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, called on Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif. The Prime Minister appreciated the generous efforts of Mr. Bill Gates on eradicating polio in the country.

The Prime Minister assured the commitment of the Government of Pakistan to eliminate the risk of polio from the country. He explained the steps taken by the Government of Pakistan related to eradication of polio, including establishing of the Prime Minister’s Task Force and the adoption of the National Emergency Action Plan on Polio Eradication which guarantees to make Pakistan polio-free by the next polio transmission season in May 2016.

Mr Gates expressed his appreciation for the exemplary work in Pakistan under the leadership of the Prime Minister in regulating polio in Pakistan. He specifically laid emphasis on the emergency operations centers that have been put in place and are playing an important role in bringing all relevant actors together. Bill Gates was of the view that with this hard work there is an opportunity to get the number of polio cases to zero this year. He said that the Prime Minister’s commitment with this step has been the most supportive factor.

The Independent Monitoring Board on Polio Eradication has acknowledged the important progress made by the Government, particularly in accessing the unsafe and missed children in the tribal areas, parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan and Karachi.

The Gates Foundation is one of the major polio eradication partners of the Government of Pakistan, along with World Health Organization, Rotary International and other donors including the Government of UAE.
