Boost Your Internet Speed with This Simple Trick

Many people assume that a fast internet package guarantees smooth browsing. Even with a gigabit internet connection and download speeds averaging 500Mbps, browsing felt slow. Websites took too long to load, and videos kept buffering. At first, we thought the internet provider was the issue. But the real problem could be your DNS settings. Don’t worry, I can tell you how to boost your internet speed with this simple trick.

Once you changed your DNS, everything improved. Pages opened instantly. Videos streamed smoothly. Games connected quickly. If you are facing similar issues, this simple change can help.

Boost Your Internet Speed with This Simple Trick

We often think internet speed is only about bandwidth. But browsing speed also depends on latency. Latency is the time your computer takes to reach a website’s server. Each time you enter a website, your system asks a DNS server to provide that website’s address. If this DNS server is slow, browsing becomes slow, even when you have fast internet.

In my case, my ISP’s DNS server was slow at responding. Every website request took longer than necessary. That delay was enough to make my browsing feel sluggish. When you switched to a faster DNS, the lookup time could be reduced significantly. Pages began loading almost instantly.

Think of it like using a slow directory to find phone numbers. The information is available, but the lookup takes longer. A faster DNS feels like switching to a digital contact list where everything appears instantly.

Does DNS Change Increase Download Speed?

Changing DNS does not increase your actual bandwidth. Your download speed remains the same. What changes is how fast websites respond when you open them. For example:

  • A webpage often makes dozens or hundreds of requests
  • Each request takes a few milliseconds
  • When the latency reduces on each request
  • The page loads much faster

So, your internet experience improves without increasing actual speed.

However, if your internet provider is throttling your bandwidth, DNS changes cannot fix that. Poor network coverage or weak signals also cannot be fixed by this method.

How to Find the Best DNS Provider

Different locations have different DNS servers with different speeds. To find the fastest one, run a DNS speed test. Several online tools allow you to compare latency. Select the DNS with the lowest latency value.

Popular fast DNS options include:

  • Google DNS
  • Cloudflare DNS
  • OpenDNS

Always choose a secure and public DNS provider.

How to Change DNS on Windows

The process is simple and takes a few minutes.

For IPv4:

  • Open View network connections
  • Right-click your active network
  • Click Properties
  • Select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)
  • Enter your new DNS server
  • Click OK

For IPv6:

  • Follow the same steps
  • Select Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6)
  • Enter the IPv6 DNS values
  • Save changes

Finally, restart your computer.

After changing the DNS, run another speed test for confirmation. You may see lower latency and noticeably faster response times. For me, this simple change fixed years of annoying slow browsing—without upgrading my internet plan. It is a small tweak, but it can make your internet feel significantly faster.
