Breaking: IT Minister Announces 5G Spectrum Auction Date, Reveals Number of Bands Involved

Pakistan is set to launch 5G services for the first time, with the spectrum auction scheduled for February, Federal Minister for IT and Telecom Shaza Fatima announced during a press briefing on Tuesday. The auction will feature seven spectrum bands, five of which are new to Pakistan, while two have been previously auctioned.

Shaza Fatima highlighted the growth of the IT sector and the government’s efforts to expand internet access. “Currently, Pakistan operates on 274 MHz of spectrum. Last year, 606 MHz was cleared, and the cabinet has approved an additional 600 MHz,” she said.

The minister emphasized that the new spectrum will accelerate the rollout of 5G, improve 4G services, and create employment opportunities for youth while supporting social development through digital connectivity.

She also announced that a mobile phone policy will be introduced to support 5G, with a focus on smart devices. Additionally, the federal cabinet has approved a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) framework to expand service options.

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has reviewed an independent consultant’s report to ensure transparency in spectrum allocation. Officials expect the new spectrum to enhance high-speed internet access and overall network performance across the country.
