Breaking: PTA Blocks Ufone-Telenor Rebrand to e& Until Legal Formalities Completed

PTA tells PTML to complete legal formalities before launching new brand after Ufone-Telenor merger.

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has directed Pak Telecom Mobile Limited to complete all legal and regulatory requirements before launching or modifying any brand name following the proposed Ufone-Telenor merger.

According to an official PTA letter dated July 2, 2026, PTML had sought prior approval for the introduction and modification of brand names for Pak Telecom Mobile Limited and Telenor Pakistan after their amalgamation.

The matter relates to the merger between PTML, which operates Ufone, and Telenor Pakistan. The Islamabad High Court had earlier sanctioned the amalgamation scheme through an order dated June 24, 2026.

In its letter, the PTA said PTML/MergeCo had been advised to notify the authority after the amalgamation takes effect under the law and before any commercial launch, campaign, or use of the requested brand name.

The regulator reiterated that PTML should not launch or modify any brand name or begin any campaign until all required legal formalities are completed. These include acknowledgement or notification by the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan.

PTA further directed the company to furnish the required confirmation to the authority before proceeding further in the matter.

Sources said the rebranding proposal under consideration involves replacing the Ufone brand with the “e&” identity after the Telenor-Ufone merger. However, the process remains subject to completion of legal and regulatory steps.

The proposed rebrand has also raised questions over the cost of changing the identity of a company in which the government holds a share, as well as the approval process required before such a transition can move forward.

The development comes as Pakistan’s telecom sector moves toward major consolidation, with the Ufone-Telenor merger expected to reshape market competition, consumer branding, and future investment strategy in mobile services.

For now, PTA’s position is clear: no new brand launch or promotional campaign can proceed until the merger-related legal process is formally completed and communicated to the regulator.
