The AI claimed that Luigi Mangione, a suspect in the killing of United Health CEO Brian Thompson, had shot himself. The incorrect alert, attributed to BBC News, has sparked debates over the reliability and ethics of artificial intelligence (AI) tools in news dissemination.
BBC is a renowned global leader in trusted journalism, therefore, it was quick to address the error. “BBC News is the most trusted news media in the world,” a spokesperson said, highlighting the need for maintaining audience trust. Furthermore, The broadcaster confirmed it has lodged a complaint with Apple, urging the tech giant to fix the problem promptly.
Despite these calls, Apple has yet to issue an official response. This silence has added fuel to the debate, with organizations like Reporters Sans Frontières (RSF) also commenting on the matter. RSF advises prominent international bodies on press freedom and criticized the feature as unreliable. “AIs are probability machines, and facts can’t be decided by a roll of the dice,” said Vincent Berthier, RSF’s technology lead, who called on Apple to act responsibly by removing the feature.
The controversy also raises serious concerns about the deployment of generative AI in public-facing roles. Experts argue that such kind of errors not only undermine the credibility of media outlets but also the public’s right to accurate and trustworthy information.
