Can the Govt’s New EV Policy Transform Pakistan’s Auto Industry?

In a move towards sustainable transportation, Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue, Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb, chaired a meeting to discuss the New Energy Vehicle (NEV) Policy 2025 at the Finance Division. The policy addresses challenges in adopting and producing electric vehicles (EVs) and also sets ambitious targets for transitioning to clean energy in the automotive industry.
The meeting was attended by key officials, including Federal Minister for Industries and Production Rana Tanveer Hussain, Governor of the State Bank of Pakistan, and Secretaries from the Ministries of Finance, Commerce, and Climate Change. Senior officers from relevant ministries and divisions also participated in the meeting.
Secretary Industries and Production presented a detailed overview of the current state of the EV industry. He stressed the need for policy interventions to ensure the smooth adoption of NEVs in line with national priorities. During the meeting, the stakeholders also discussed issues including overcoming barriers to EV production and adoption, improving manufacturing processes, addressing infrastructure needs, and encouraging private-sector investment.
The Finance Minister highlighted the importance of timely development and implementation of the NEV Policy 2025-30. He also emphasized the need for coordinated efforts to align policy targets with Pakistanโs environmental and economic priorities. The meeting concluded with a commitment to speed up efforts for the successful implementation of the NEV Policy, which will pave the way for a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable future for Pakistan.
Our Opinion
The NEV Policy 2025 is an admirable initiative toward sustainable transportation, however, its success relies on effective implementation and addressing existing challenges. The governmentโs commitment to reducing power tariffs for electric vehicle charging stations by 45% is a positive step. However, concerns have been raised regarding the policyโs focus on imports, which may undermine local manufacturing efforts
Additionally, the ambition-execution gap highlighted in a recent study suggests that without a clear roadmap and stakeholder collaboration, achieving the policyโs objectives may be challenging. Therefore, it is imperative for the government to address these issues to ensure the policyโs effectiveness and contribute to Pakistanโs sustainable development goals.
