ChatGPT Health: OpenAI’s New Feature to Handle Millions of Weekly Health Questions

OpenAI has announced a new feature called ChatGPT Health, designed to give users a dedicated space to talk about health and wellness topics. The announcement was made on January 7, 2026, highlighting how frequently people already rely on ChatGPT for health-related questions. According to the company, more than 230 million users ask about health and wellness every week on the platform.
ChatGPT Health aims to organize these conversations in a more focused and private way. Instead of mixing health discussions with general chats, the new feature keeps them separate. This means that personal health details shared in the Health section will not appear in regular conversations with ChatGPT. If a user starts discussing medical or wellness concerns outside this section, the system may gently suggest switching to ChatGPT Health for a better experience.

Although Health chats are kept separate, the feature can still use helpful context from a user’s general activity. For example, if someone previously asked ChatGPT for a marathon training plan, the Health feature may recognize that the user is a runner when discussing fitness or injury prevention. This allows for more relevant and personalized responses without repeating information.
One of the most notable aspects of ChatGPT Health is its ability to connect with external wellness platforms. OpenAI says the feature will integrate with apps such as Apple Health, MyFitnessPal, and Function. Through these connections, users may be able to reference personal data like activity levels, nutrition, or fitness goals during conversations. OpenAI has also emphasized that health-related chats will not be used to train its AI models, aiming to address privacy concerns.
Fidji Simo, OpenAI’s CEO of Applications, explained that ChatGPT Health is meant to address some ongoing challenges in healthcare. These include high costs, limited access to medical professionals, long wait times, and gaps in ongoing care. By offering an always-available tool, OpenAI hopes to help people better understand and manage their health questions between doctor visits.
However, the launch also raises important concerns. AI systems like ChatGPT do not truly understand truth or accuracy in the way humans do. They generate responses based on patterns in data, which means they can sometimes provide incorrect or misleading information. These errors, often referred to as “hallucinations,” are a known limitation of large language models.
OpenAI has acknowledged these risks clearly. In its terms of service, the company states that ChatGPT is not intended to diagnose or treat medical conditions. The Health feature is designed to support conversations and provide general information, not replace professional medical advice.
ChatGPT Health will roll out to users in the coming weeks. As interest in digital health tools continues to grow, this feature reflects both the opportunities and responsibilities that come with using AI in healthcare-related spaces.
