The decision was taken in a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf, officials of Ministry of Information Technology briefed prime minister on 3G licence.
Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf recently directed the Ministry of Information and Technology and PTA for hiring consultant to accelerate the process of auction of 3G licenses. So, Government on Friday decided to immediately give an advertisement in the media for hiring a consultants for 3g auction to expedite the process of 3G licence auction which had already got delayed considerably due to the unnecessary official procedures.
The government had estimated Rs75 billion on account of 3G auction in the budget for last fiscal year, however hiring of local consultant by the Auction Supervisory Committee (ASC) raised serious issues of transparency; this, in turn, mounted pressure on the government to delay the auction and hire an international consultant to ensure transparency in sale of 3G license.
Participation in the auction requires thorough planning, completion of procedural formalities and lining up of large sums of money. Arranging such finances on short notice is not easy, especially in the present global economic scenario. Other relevant stakeholders including Auction Supervisory Committee have emphasized the necessity of appointing the Consultant.
