Elections Have Increased SMS Based Revenues

Elections have created a great amount of hype in people, not only broadcast media but campaign is also highly depending up on SMS. Cellular companies of Pakistan have reported a significant rise in their SMS based revenue, the average text traffic touched nearly 1 billion per day.

Nearly Rs1 billion worth SMSs are exchanged per month usually which translates into more than Rs 300,000 SMS per day but the revenues are increasing by 10%-20% these days as mostly users generate SMSs through packages.

• The number of SMS bundle subscription has increased with the same pace on the high demand of the cheap communication way.
• Political parties rely on mobile phone have been increased due to poor law and order situation which have kept them away to organize rally and conventions for politicking.

It is expected that this SMS hype will increase in next 2 days i-e (9th – 11th May, 2013) because the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has given strict orders to all the political parties participating in elections to stop their campaigns by the wee small hour of 9th May. So SMS will be the only option left with Political parties and they will be depending on spreading their message through SMS before polling.
