The leading US based chip-set maker, Qualcomm has announced its plans about the first 5G modem of the world. Qualcomm said that “it is all set to put the first stone in place to build the path for 5G modem”.
Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X50 modem will work on millemetre wave spectrum in 28GHz band and will also support a maximum download speed 5Gb/s.
“This is the first of a family of chipsets and we’re happy to put the first stone in place to build the path to 5G.”
Said Cristiano Amon, Qualcomm EVP.

Snapdragon X50 will be available in market as sample volumes in the 2nd half of 2017.
Qualcomm also introduced 3 upgraded chip-sets:
- Two higher-tier chips (653 and 626)
- One mid-tier (427) model
Cristiano Amon, Qualcomm EVP, also said that:
“Qualcomm is focused on both licensed and unlicensed spectrum as well as cellular and Wi-Fi technology to boost capacity and speeds. Only 16 per cent of operators worldwide can implement gigabit class LTE using licensed spectrum, but he said that using LTE-U and LAA (Licensed-Assisted Access) that percentage rises to 64 per cent.”
Keeping in view the growth in mobile phone market and its increasing use; one could easily understand that the competition is really very tough. Also that chip-set plays fundamental role in smartphone use hence this area is becoming even tougher. Let’s see that with the advent of 5G technology how other chip-set manufactures introduce their modems to support new technology.
