FacioMetrics was started in 2015 to meet the increasing demand and interest for facial image analysis – with all kinds of applications including augmented/virtual reality, animation, audience reaction measurement, and others. They began research at Carnegie Mellon University, Pennsylvania developing state-of-the-art computer vision and machine learning algorithms for facial image analysis. They specialize in artificial intelligence to give facial image analysis tools to smartphone’s applications.

A Facebook spokesperson said in an email reply to an AFP inquiry:
“How people share and communicate is changing and things like masks and other effects allow people to express themselves in fun and creative ways,”
“We’re excited to welcome the FacioMetrics team who will help bring more fun effects to photos and videos and build even more engaging sharing experiences on Facebook.”
Users of Facebook and its subsidiaries such as Instagram will have fun with pictures and videos by using FacioMetrics. Its a kind of counter move to those features in Snapchat.
Snapchat has more than 100 million users globally of the service for sending videos, images and text messages which vanish after being viewed. Some reports say it generates 10 billion video views approximately per day.
After unsuccessful try to buy Snapchat some years ago, Facebook has decided to clone its popular features.
FacioMetrics has surely taken a big step forward by joining the team at Facebook, where they will be able to advance their work at an incredible scale, reaching people from across the globe.

FacioMetrics founder and chief executive Fernando De la Torre said in a release. Facebook has not yet disclosed the financial figures of this deal to buy FacioMetrics.
