The old messages appear to be the new one however when one opens it, realizes that it is an old message deleted long ago. This is quite haunting! imagine you sitting with your spouse when a message of your ex accidentally appears. This Facebook Messenger bug is quite ridiculous and messing up many relationships.
Facebook Messenger Bug Rekindles Old Flames & Messes up Relationships
This news was broke out by Facebook users in multiple tweets where they confirmed that they all are getting years old messages back on messenger. Later Facebook revealed that they already know about this messenger bug, they are working on it and will get it fixed as soon as possible.
While telling about this, Facebook said in a statement:
“Some people are seeing older messages on Facebook.com. We are aware of the issue and are actively working to resolve it in as soon as possible. We apologize for the inconvenience.”
With a bad news, there is also good news that is not everyone is affected by this bug but it is quite embarrassing to suddenly see some of your old messages reappear out of nowhere. Plus there are some who would rather certain conversations not resurface, such as conversations with a former partner, or friend or family member that might have passed away.

Now Facebook has told verge, that this issue, caused by software updates, has been fully resolved.
