This was announced by the company’s Vice-President of Messaging Products, David Marcus, who said that more than 1 billion messages are sent each month between Messenger users and businesses or pages.
Messenger reached the 500 million mark in November 2014, and the app recorded 800 million in January 2016, adding 100 million from June 2015. With recent statistics, Messenger should pass the magic billion mark around July. It also stated that one billion messages are shared using Facebook Messenger every month.
Along with the milestone announcement, the social network also added a couple of new features, mostly aimed at businesses.
Facebook Messenger’s new features:
User names for both users and businesses, enabling other users to connect via a simple URL: m.me/yourusername.
- Messenger Links, which enable users who click on the URLs mentioned above to immediately launch conversations with pages or businesses.
- Messenger Codes, which users can scan with the cameras on their smartphones or tablets to launch threads.
