Facebook Tests Facial Recognition App for Employees

Facebook, one of the largest tech giant is already fighting privacy lapses, and now it has once again come under the limelight for testing a facial recognition app.  Facebook Facial Recognition App has the ability to identify people by pointing their phone’s cameras at them. This app is specifically built for Facebook employes and tested on them but never publically released. The social media app also argued when asked about the recognition of people.

According to a report, this app was developed between 2015 and 2016 but has been discontinued due to unknown reason. While telling about it, the spokesperson said that:

“As a way to learn about new technologies, our teams regularly build apps to use internally. The app described here were only available to Facebook employees, and could only recognise employees and their friends who had face recognition enabled,”

Such features can increase anxiety among people and can make them worried about their privacy as well. Even in the past, Facebook has received a huge criticism on facial recognition.

.

“Face recognition can lead to loss of privacy and face replacement technology may be misused to create misleading videos. “Recent world events concerning advances in, and abuse of face recognition technology invoke the need to understand methods that deal with de-identification. Our contribution is the only one suitable for video, including live video, and presents a quality that far surpasses the literature methods,”

Facebook already has to pay  $35 billion class-action lawsuits for misusing facial recognition data in Illinois. So this time, Facebook should either prove this news false or stop launching such feature that affects someone’s personal space.
