Facebook to Launch Artificial Algorithm to Recognize Facial Features

Facebook now comes with the latest advancements, as the newest artificial algorithm is working on Facebook and with it Facebook can now recognize you without seeing you. The Facebook team is working on an algorithm which can detect your side pose facial features as well as ears and other things like hair-dos, dresses, piercings etc.

No Need to Show Your Face to Camera; Facebook can Now Recognize You Without Seeing You

This feature can be useful as well as disadvantageous as it harms people’s privacy. This algorithm will recognize people by their body shapes and postures too even if a person is not looking into the camera lens. Facebook presented their experimental results in Boston in a conference named Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition conference. These experiments were carried on 40,000 images from Flickr which were open to public and computed results were 83% accurate for persons looking into camera and looking away from camera.

Recently launched app by Facebook “Moments” also use this advanced technique to group images according to facial features. It also groups images on the basis of friends faces, hence you can forward them pictures more easily.

While describing the algorithm the head of the team, Yann LeCun, says that

This project named as DeepFace can recognize same face in two images with the accuracy of 97.25% while a human brain can tell that at a rate of accuracy of 97.53%. Hence it can be said that this feature is nearly accurate to Human Brain.

DeepFace is right now only a research project, but in near future it will surely be used to help with facial recognition on the Facebook website. It might help tracking your face in real life and in CCTV cameras when you move from one signal to another or you shop from one store to other. It will help in keeping the track of behavior of a person also.
