Fraud or Fallacy? Is Meezan Bank Covering Up a Data Breach?

For the past few days, social media has been abuzz with complaints from Meezan Bank customers about unauthorized transactions on their debit and credit cards. Several complaints have been circulating about the potential Meezan Bank data breach however, the bank has categorically denied any such breach, guaranteeing that customer data remains โ€œcompletely safe.โ€ However, reports from customers paint a concerning picture. High-value transactions, ranging from Rs1.4 million to Rs2.1 million, were conducted without the knowledge or consent of account holders. Alarmingly, many of these transactions occurred in foreign currencies, leading to suspicions about Meezan Bankโ€™s systems security.

Meezan Bank Denies Data Breach Amid Widespread Fraud Reports

In a customer advisory, Meezan Bank labeled the rumors of a data breach as โ€œentirely false.โ€ The bank guaranteed customers that all disputed transactions were unsecured e-commerce transactions. They were fully covered under international chargeback mechanisms. Furthermore, the bank also promised quick compensation for affected users. However, the bankโ€™s reassurances have done little to repress customer anxieties. The question arises of how cards never used for Internet bankingโ€”or even ATMsโ€”could be exploited for unauthorized transactions.

Voices of Concern

Malik Zaka, a resident of Islamabad reported losing Rs2.1 million through seven fraudulent transactions in Malaysian currency. Similarly, a customer from Lahore faced an Rs1.4 million loss without receiving any OTPs or notifications.

The authenticity of these reports has led some to infer whether Meezan Bank is withholding information about a potential data breach to avoid reputational damage. The bank blames unsecured e-commerce practices for these unauthorized transactions. However, customers argue otherwise, with many insisting their cards were never used online.ย To prevent such incidents, Meezan Bank has recommended customers practice caution when using cards online. Still, users remain skeptical, questioning if the bankโ€™s systems are secure enough to handle these risks. They are left wondering: Is Meezan Bank truly safeguarding their data, or is there more to this story than meets the eye? What do you think? Do share with us in the comment section.
