Samsung Electro-Mechanics (SEM) has started mass production of its new 5x optical module. The rumors suggest that we will be able to see it in Samsung’s upcoming Note series phones. It seems that Samsung wants to join the long optical zoom party as Huawei P30 Pro brought the periscope camera trend and Oppo Reno 10x zoom, that’s why it is now working to introduce 5x Optical Zoom Smartphone Camera.

Due to its slim 5mm profile compared to the 6mm thickness on previous Samsung modules, the sensor will not extend beyond the back. There is a new 5x sensor that uses a light refracting prism similar to the P30 Pro but it will come with a rectangular lens rather than a circular one. As the module will be arranged vertically, so it will keep the thickness down.
In order to show the real-life performance of 2x and 5x zoom modes, Samsung has provided sample shots from the new sensor. We hope that the new optics of Samsung would beat the P30 Pro’s and Oppo Reno’s telephoto cameras, as currently they stand alone and no one is there to beat them. Let’s see how it will work when it comes to market. We have to wait in order to check how it performs in the real world.
