Gmail Phone Number Verification Backfires, Leaving Users Frustrated

The Gmail phone number verification process, designed to improve account security, has left many users frustrated. Several Gmail users have reported a persistent error that renders their phone numbers unusable for verification during critical security checks. The Google feature aims to protect accounts against sophisticated hacking attempts, however, its failure indicates a major flaw in Google’s system.

Gmail Phone Number Verification Loop Leaves Users Stuck in Errors

The verification process typically requests users to provide a phone number linked to their account to receive a text code. However, some users are stuck in a verification loop where the system repeatedly rejects their phone numbers. This issue was highlighted on a Gmail support subreddit, with some users complaining that even after trying multiple phone numbers, they faced the same rejection message:

“This phone number cannot be used for verification.”

Google suggests using an alternative phone number, such as one from a different carrier or a family member if such an error occurs. However, it is pertinent to mention that this solution is unhelpful and impractical, given the sensitive nature of account security.

The problem is more concerning as there is no direct support line for Gmail users to fix such issues. Unless users subscribe to Google One, which offers limited support, they are left navigating online help forms and documentation. It often fails to address specific problems effectively.

When asked about these concerns, a Google spokesperson stated:

“The company is working on a solution to address this issue, but it is expected to roll out in about a month. In the meantime, users facing this problem are advised to wait a week and try again, as excessive attempts may trigger additional security warnings.”

This situation highlights the challenges of balancing robust security with user accessibility. Google’s measures aim to protect accounts, but this verification flaw leaves users stranded, unable to secure their valuable data.
