Google Adds Wheelchair Accessible Navigation to Google Maps

Google Maps is helping people to navigate and explore the world by providing directions worldwide, to people who are traveling by car, bicycle or on foot. The search giant recently has introduced a wheelchair-friendly navigation feature on its maps application that will provide optimal transit routes to make transit more accessible to nearly everyone. To facilitate physical disabled people Google Maps Introduces Wheelchair Accessible Routes.

To find the wheelchair accessible routes, you have to type your destination into Google Maps, then tap Directions, and choose the public transportation icon. Once you tap on Options, you will find wheelchair accessible under the Routes section. You will be able to see the list of all that possible routes that accommodate wheelchairs. When you tap on the two-line description and scroll down to the accessibility section, you will know the place doesn’t have a feature if you see a no symbol next to it.

Google users in all the major metropolitan transit centers such as New York, Tokyo, London, Mexico City, Sydney, and Boston now have full access to the upgraded maps system. In the coming months Google plans on adding more wheelchair-accessible routes to its app as they work with various transit agencies.

Google Maps project manager Rio Akasaka wrote in a company statement:

“With the help of transit agencies around the globe and people like you who contribute local knowledge, we’re making progress toward a more accessible world for everyone,”

By adding this feature Google Maps just made so easy the movement of physical disabled people, because anyone with a physical disability knows it well that it is not that simple. Google added this feature for disabled people and pointed out that these new routes will be most useful to those in a wheelchair, but users on crutches or those with children in a stroller could also find the feature very handy and can take help.
