Google Faces Criticism for Removing Palestine from its Maps

A Change.org petition titled “Google: Put Palestine on your maps” has engrossed above 150,000 signatures as of Monday. The petition, drafted by Zak Martin, smashes the lapse of the UN non-member observer state’s name on the map as a “serious insult” to Palestinians.

An avowal by the Palestinian Journalists’ Forum (PJF) generated an online movement against Google.

“[This] is part of the Israeli scheme to establish its name as a legitimate state for generations to come and abolish Palestine once and for all.”

The statement, mentioned by the Middle East Monitor, declaims.

Google removed Palestine’s name entirely from its map application. It labelled all Palestinian areas as Israel on July 25, according to the group. The journalists have asked the company to fix the slip. Arguments are going on about the debatable verdict which is “conflicting to all international customs and settlements.”

If Palestine is typed into Google Maps search, a blank space within Israel’s territory marking the areas of Gaza, Judea and Samaria with a dashed line appears.

Enraged Twitter users have started the hashtags, #BoycottGoogle and #PalestineIsHere. This shows their frustration at Google for outwardly taking sides. Some even threatened to shift to other search engines. Whereas others are thinking to stop using some of its facilities if the US tech giant sticks to its verdict.

In November 2012 Palestine got non-member observer rank at the UN. In spite of intense resistance from Israel and its associate US.
