Google Reveals Location of Its First Office in Pakistan

Google has revealed Karachi as the location of its first local office in Pakistan, marking a major expansion of the US technology giant’s presence in the country and a deeper commitment to Pakistan’s growing digital economy.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif inaugurated Google Pakistan’s office on Tuesday during a meeting with a nine-member delegation led by Wilson L. White, Google’s Vice President for Global Affairs.

White described the opening as a “big milestone”, saying Google had been investing in Pakistan and remained committed to the country for more than a decade.

The Karachi office gives Google a permanent local footprint at a time when Pakistan is trying to position itself as a major technology and digital services hub.

The decision to establish the office in Karachi places Pakistan’s largest commercial city at the center of Google’s expanded local operations.

The company is expected to use its presence in the country to strengthen engagement with developers, businesses, educational institutions, startups, technology stakeholders and policymakers.

Google’s expansion also comes as Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has set a target of $30 billion in annual IT exports for Pakistan.

White said Google’s ambitions were aligned with Pakistan’s technology goals and highlighted opportunities to expand digital skills, support local businesses and further develop the country’s technology ecosystem.

Information Technology Minister Shaza Fatima Khawaja said Google’s local presence would strengthen Pakistan’s technology talent pipeline and provide additional support to the domestic digital ecosystem.

She said the arrival of major global technology companies could also encourage other international firms to establish operations in the country.

Google has already contributed to the upskilling of around one million Pakistanis through career certificates and programs involving schools and teachers.

With a permanent office now established in Karachi, the company could deepen these programs while working more closely with Pakistan’s technology community.

Pakistan-made Chromebooks could target regional markets

Google has also partnered with local companies for the assembly of Chromebooks in Pakistan, adding a hardware manufacturing component to its engagement with the country.

White said there was significant potential for Chromebooks assembled in Pakistan to eventually be exported to other countries in the region.

The move could help Pakistan expand beyond software and digital services into technology hardware assembly and regional supply chains.

Google enters a new phase in Pakistan

The establishment of the Karachi office marks a shift from program-based engagement towards a more permanent corporate presence in Pakistan.

Google is expected to deepen its work in areas including digital skills, businesses, education, startups, hardware, and online safety.

The local office could also strengthen coordination between Google and Pakistani regulators and policymakers as the country develops its digital economy and technology governance frameworks.
