Google Updates Search Homepage With a New Plus Menu

Google rarely changes the look of its main Search homepage. For many years, the design has stayed mostly the same. Users are familiar with the clean layout and the simple search bar. However, Google is now introducing another small but noticeable update. A new “plus” menu has appeared on the Google Search homepage. This change follows the recent addition of an AI Mode shortcut earlier this year. The update is part of Google’s ongoing effort to make Search more task-focused.

On Google.com, the search bar now shows a plus icon on the far left. This icon replaces the traditional magnifying glass. When users click the plus icon, two options appear. These options are “Upload image” and “Upload file.”

These features are not brand new. Google already allows image and file uploads in certain tools. However, placing them directly in the main search bar gives them more visibility. It also makes it clear that Search can do more than answer questions.

The new plus menu closely matches the experience found in AI Mode. It highlights that users can complete tasks using Google, not just search for links. This also suggests that uploaded images and files can work with AI Mode and AI Overviews.

At the moment, this update is limited to desktop users. It does not appear on mobile browsers yet. The feature is already live across many desktop setups. It works even when users are signed out. It also appears in Incognito mode.

Google is making similar adjustments in its mobile apps as well. On iOS, the Google app recently replaced the Google Labs beaker icon. The new icon now opens a user’s AI Mode history. This change makes it easier to return to previous AI interactions.

Many users find this update helpful. Accessing AI history from the Home tab saves time. However, this feature is currently limited to iOS. Android users do not yet have the same option.

Google has also refined the AI Mode home screen. The history button has received a visual refresh. It now appears on the left side of the screen. At the same time, the back or dismiss button has moved to the right.

These changes may seem small. Still, they show a clear direction. Google is slowly reshaping Search around artificial intelligence. The company wants users to see Search as a tool for action, not just information.

By adding upload options and improving AI access, Google is encouraging deeper interaction. Users can now start tasks directly from the homepage. This could include analyzing files, understanding images, or using AI to assist with work.

Overall, the new plus menu is a subtle but meaningful update. It keeps the familiar look of Google Search while adding more power. As AI becomes more central to Google’s services, more updates like this are likely to follow.
