Google’s Multi Billion Dollar Deal With Apple Exposed

The latest revelation from the ongoing antitrust lawsuit by the US Department of Justice (DoJ) against Google is startling. The DoJ has found out that a $20 billion payment was made by Google to Apple in 2022. This huge amount of money was paid to allegedly secure Google’s position as the default search engine on Apple’s Safari browser on iPhones, iPads, and Macs.

Intriguingly, both tech companies have historically kept the terms of the agreement secret, despite renegotiating it several times since 2002.

The lawsuit that was filed last year showed that Google’s payments to Apple comprised 36% of Apple’s total Safari revenue. And now, in the new revelation, the exact amount of $20 billion is confirmed.

Notably, the deal has been subjected to criticism from competitors such as Microsoft, as its CEO Satya Nadella claims that the agreement suppresses competition for search engines like Bing. He even revealed that Microsoft asked Apple to adopt Bing as the default search engine.

Apple, on the other hand, defends its choice. In court testimony, Apple’s Eddy Cue expressed concerns regarding Bing’s ability to match Google in “quality and functionality.” According to Cue, Apple simply believes Google offers the “best” search experience for its users.

Conclusively, the future of the new agreement now rests on the DoJ lawsuit. Moreover, it is pertinent to mention here that the closing arguments are set at the end of the week, and the judge is expected to give the final verdict sometime in 2024.
