Waymo spokesperson said in a statement:
“We’re taking our eight years of experience in building self-driving hardware and software and conducting a technical exploration into how our technology can integrate into a truck,”
Other ride hailing companies are also working on self driving trucks. Uber Technologies is working on autonomous trucking via its Otto unit.
According to Waymo its final goal was to implement its driverless system on vehicles without steering wheels or pedals because it didn’t want humans to feel as if they needed to monitor the vehicle. However, government regulations currently require a vehicle to have steering wheels and pedals.
