Government Forms National Committee on Information and Communication Security Amid Rising Cyber Threats

The federal government has constituted the National Committee on Information and Communication Security to address growing cyber threats and assess risks to national security arising from vulnerabilities in government digital systems.

According to an official notification, the committee will review the security of government information systems and identify cyber weaknesses across ministries and public sector organizations. It will conduct information security gap assessments and propose corrective measures aimed at reducing cyber risks and strengthening overall resilience.

The committee will also formulate recommendations to improve the effectiveness of Pakistan’s national cybersecurity framework and monitor the implementation of information security measures within government institutions. Special focus will be given to critical sectors, including health, energy, aviation, and transport, where a comprehensive cybersecurity review will be carried out.

In addition, the committee will recommend improvements in technical controls within government IT systems, propose restructuring of human resources related to cybersecurity, and ensure that security considerations are embedded in the procurement of cyber and IT systems.

The National Committee will be chaired by the Secretary of IT and Telecom. Its members include the Chairman of the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), representatives from the National Telecom and Information Security Board (NTISB), relevant security agencies, the Director General of National CERT, as well as representatives from the provinces of Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

Under the National CERT framework, a Federal CERT will also be established. The committee will submit progress reports on a quarterly basis, as the government moves to strengthen the security of public sector digital infrastructure and enhance national cyber preparedness.
