Government Moves to Safeguard Telecom Connectivity During Monsoon Emergencies

The federal government has directed mobile operators to strengthen network resilience and maintain uninterrupted telecom services across Pakistan during the ongoing monsoon season, according to sources in the Ministry of Information Technology.

The ministry has instructed telecom companies to secure their networks, transmission systems, and supporting infrastructure against possible damage from floods, heavy rainfall, and other weather-related emergencies. The move is aimed at ensuring that mobile and emergency communication services remain available when they are needed most.

As part of the preparedness plan, 1122 emergency call centers have been activated in all four provinces, allowing the public to seek assistance during floods and other emergencies. Provincial emergency response centers will remain connected to the National Disaster Management Authority’s central control room for faster coordination and response.

Officials said calls received through 1122 during flood situations or other emergencies will be acted upon immediately. Provincial call centers will also maintain coordination with the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority to address any telecom-related disruptions.

According to ministry sources, 27.8 million emergency calls were received during last year’s flood-related conditions. Despite the scale of the disaster, only 7 percent of telecom sites were affected, while 99 percent of the disrupted sites were restored within one month.

The Ministry of IT said it remains committed to maintaining telecom connectivity throughout the current monsoon season and has asked operators to keep contingency teams, backup power arrangements, and rapid restoration mechanisms ready.

The measures reflect the government’s wider effort to keep emergency communication channels operational during natural disasters, particularly in flood-prone and remote areas where mobile connectivity often becomes critical for rescue and relief operations.
