Government Struggles to Counter PTI’s Growing Social Media Influence

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), led by former Prime Minister Imran Khan, has successfully leveraged social media to shape public opinion, mobilize supporters, and challenge government authority. Even as Khan faces legal challenges, including imprisonment and over 150 criminal charges, PTIโ€™s online influence remains formidable. It has helped them in organizing large-scale protests and spreading its narrative across digital platforms.

PML-N leader from Rawalpindi Hanif Abbasi recently highlighted PTIโ€™s use of social media to allegedly spread unrest and misinformation in Pakistan. While addressing a press conference, Abbasi claimed that false narratives, including exaggerated casualty reports on November 26 protests and celebratory posts during national crises, were part of PTIโ€™s digital strategy to destabilize the country. He further alleged that individuals involved in violent incidents were motivated by the partyโ€™s rhetoric, stressing the need for accountability.

It is pertinent to mention here that to counter PTIโ€™s online dominance, the government has implemented different measures such as forming a Joint Investigation Team (JIT), cracking down on VPNs, implementing the national firewall, etc.

However, these steps have drawn criticism for infringing on freedom of speech and expression. International watchdogs, businesses, and other stakeholders have criticized internet slowdown and app bans during protests. Likewise, civil society has raised concerns regarding the mass arrests of PTI supporters and inhumane treatment by law enforcement agencies. Despite government efforts, PTIโ€™s digital campaigns have remained effective, with protests such as the November 2024 Islamabad march demanding Khanโ€™s release and the dissolution of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharifโ€™s government.

Even after all these efforts, PTI has a large social media following and influence. The PTIโ€™s official X page has around 10.3 M followers, Imran Khanโ€™s FB account has around 15.3 Million followers while the PTI FB account has around 8.3 M followers, and similarly, they have a considerable userbase on other platforms including Instagram, TikTok, etc.

Analysts suggest the governmentโ€™s challenges stem from a combination of public discontent, PTIโ€™s digital savvy team, and backlash against censorship. Moreover, economic instability, unemployment, inflation, and political polarization provide fertile ground for PTI to gather support. Additionally, government-imposed restrictions and heavy crackdown by law enforcement agencies often backfire, increasing public sympathy for PTI and undermining trust in state institutions.

Our Perspective

While the governmentโ€™s efforts to counter PTIโ€™s social media influence are notable, a more sustainable solution lies in addressing the root causes of public discontent. Economic stability, political inclusivity, and transparent governance hold the key to reducing the appeal of digital propaganda. Furthermore, engaging all stakeholders in constructive dialogue and avoiding excessive curbs on freedom of expression can help in the promotion of a unified national narrative. In an era dominated by digital platforms, a balanced approach that combines accountability with democratic freedoms is essential for long-term stability.
