Govt Moves to Improve IT Education Quality, Tighten Accreditation System

The government has decided to accelerate efforts to improve the quality of IT education in Pakistan, identify unapproved educational institutions, and align the practical skills of IT graduates with international standards.
A high-level meeting on the IT Skills Assessment Test and the accreditation framework for computing education was held under the chairmanship of Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Establishment, Senator Ahsan Iqbal. The meeting reviewed educational standards, accreditation procedures, and the skills of IT graduates in relation to industry requirements.
During the meeting, the federal minister directed the Ministry of IT to develop an effective system to identify unapproved institutions and academic programmes. The system aims to protect students from enrolling in unrecognized programmes.

The meeting also stressed the need to provide students with reliable information about the accreditation status of universities, affiliated colleges and individual academic programmes. This would help students make informed decisions before enrolling in computing and IT programmes.
Officials informed the meeting that more than 33,000 students from 188 institutions participated in the IT Skills Assessment Test. Senator Ahsan Iqbal directed officials to align the assessment framework with international standards and the changing requirements of the technology industry.
The authorities were also asked to prepare a detailed report on the performance of participating institutions and the test results of their students. The report will help identify institutions where academic programmes require improvements.
The meeting also examined cases in which students complete all requirements for a degree but fail practical skills assessments. Officials were also asked to review cases where students pass the skills assessment without completing their degrees.
The government believes such cases require a detailed review of educational standards, examination systems and the relevance of academic curricula to industry requirements.
The federal minister also called for stronger cooperation between educational institutions and the IT industry. He directed officials to consult the Pakistan Software Houses Association and other industry stakeholders to bring skills assessments, professional certifications and academic programmes closer to market requirements.

The meeting also considered a proposal to introduce mandatory skills assessment tests at different stages of academic programmes. However, officials were directed to assess the potential impact of such tests on students and educational institutions before taking a final decision.
The government also stressed the need for stronger coordination between the Higher Education Commission (HEC), National Computing Education Accreditation Council (NCEAC), Ministry of IT and other relevant federal and provincial institutions.
According to the government, the measures aim to improve the quality of IT education, protect students from unrecognized programmes, develop skills according to industry needs, and create better employment opportunities for Pakistani IT graduates.
