HEC Launches Revised Computing Curriculum to Strengthen Future-Ready Digital Skills

The Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan has unveiled a revised Computing curriculum aimed at equipping students with industry-relevant skills and emerging technological competencies. The curriculum was officially launched by HEC Chairman Dr. Niaz Ahmad Akhtar during the British Council’s Partnership for Future Skills and Employment event, held under the European Union TVET Sector Support Programme at the National Incubation Centre (NIC), Islamabad.

The HEC delegation attending the event included Dr. Muhammad Ali Nasir, Advisor (Research & Innovation Division), Engr. Waheed Ahmed Mangi, Head of Academics Division, and Mr. Hidayatullah Kasi, Deputy Director (Curriculum).

During the event, Dr. Muhammad Ali Nasir presented key features of the newly revised curriculum, which was developed through extensive consultations with academia, industry representatives, accreditation bodies, the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication, Pakistan Software Export Board (PSEB), Pakistan Software Houses Association (P@SHA), National Computing Education Accreditation Council (NCEAC), and various development partners.

The revised curriculum aligns with HEC’s Undergraduate Education Policy 2023 and marks a significant transition towards competency-based and industry-oriented computing education. It is designed to bridge the gap between academic learning and the evolving demands of the technology sector.

A major highlight of the curriculum is the introduction of 14 specialization pathways within the Computer Science programme. These pathways focus on high-demand fields such as Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Cybersecurity, Cloud Computing, Robotics, Internet of Things (IoT), and Quantum Computing, enabling students to develop expertise in emerging technologies.

The curriculum also incorporates several practical and career-focused components, including industry-recognized certifications, mandatory internships, and industry-supervised capstone projects. These elements are integrated within an outcome-based education framework to ensure graduates possess the technical competencies, problem-solving abilities, and professional skills required in today’s competitive job market.

Speaking at the event, HEC officials emphasized that the revised curriculum is intended to enhance graduate employability, support innovation, and strengthen Pakistan’s position in the global digital economy. By fostering closer collaboration between academia and industry, the initiative aims to produce a workforce that is better prepared to meet future technological challenges and opportunities.

The launch represents a significant step in Pakistan’s higher education reforms, reinforcing HEC’s commitment to modernizing academic programmes and developing a skilled talent pool capable of driving the country’s digital transformation.
