This is not the first time TikTok has faced scrutiny in the UK. In 2023, the ICO fined the platform £12.7 million ($16 million) for violating data protection laws by collecting and using personal information from children under 13 without parental consent.

In response to the investigation, a Reddit spokesperson said that the company is cooperating with the ICO and intends to comply with all relevant regulations. The spokesperson also mentioned that while most Reddit users are adults, the platform is implementing changes this year to strengthen age verification in line with UK regulations. ByteDance, TikTok, and Imgur have yet to respond to the ICO’s investigation.
