According to Huawei, the new series reflects years of investment in its own hardware, software, and chip technologies. The company said it invested CNY1.8 trillion in research and development between 2007 and the end of 2025.
New Kirin Chips Power the Series
The Mate 90 Pro Max and higher-end models use the Kirin 9050 Pro chipset. Huawei claims the chip delivers a 31% improvement in overall performance.
The Mate 90 Pro uses the Kirin 9035, which is claimed to offer a 20% performance increase, while the standard Mate 90 comes with the Kirin 9030 and offers a reported 27% performance gain.
Huawei has also focused on gaming performance. The Kirin 9050 Pro supports hardware-accelerated ray tracing and can reportedly process up to 55 million rays per second.
The chips work alongside HarmonyOS 7 as part of Huawei’s integrated hardware and software approach.
Display Reaches 12,000 Nits
The Mate 90 Pro introduces Huawei’s second-generation Linglong Display. The panel can reach a peak brightness of 12,000 nits at 1% APL and uses an improved Tandem OLED architecture.
Huawei says the new panel architecture increases display lifespan by 138%.
The Mate 90 Pro Max and Mate 90 RS ULTIMATE DESIGN take things further with Full-color Linglong Displays and BT.2020 color management. More than 60 popular apps can reportedly convert P3 content into a wider BT.2020 color range.
Huawei has also added new eye-care features, including ambient-light detection and a 1-nit low-brightness mode.
Major Camera Upgrades
Camera performance is another major focus of the Mate 90 series. All models feature True-to-Color Camera 3.0, which uses a full-focal-length infrared optical coating to improve color reproduction.
Huawei claims the technology improves overall color accuracy by 37% and skin-tone accuracy by 62%.
The Mate 90 Pro Max gets the most advanced camera setup in the lineup. It features an 18 EV ultra-HDR main camera and a 200MP RYYB telephoto camera. The phone also uses hardware-based image stabilization rated at 7.5 by CIPA.
Huawei says the system can produce stable images at zoom levels above 20x.
The company has also introduced the XMAGE Z10 Modular Camera with a 1-inch sensor and continuous optical zoom covering 24mm to 240mm. The camera has a maximum aperture range of f/2.0 to f/4.5.

Stronger Build and Water Resistance
The Mate 90 Pro and higher-end models use Huawei’s full-body Kunlun Xuanwu architecture for additional durability.
The camera cover uses Optical Kunlun Glass, which Huawei says offers 20 times better drop resistance. The front display uses third-generation Kunlun Glass with a claimed 50% improvement in impact resistance.
The Pro Max Premium Edition and RS ULTIMATE DESIGN use upgraded Xuanwu Kunlun Glass, with Huawei claiming reduced reflections and improved scratch resistance.
The entire lineup carries IP68 dust and water resistance up to six meters, along with IP69 protection against high-temperature and high-pressure water jets.
Connectivity and AI Features
Huawei has also upgraded connectivity across the Mate 90 family. The phones feature a new combined Wi-Fi and cellular antenna design that provides a reported 2dB increase in signal gain.
All models support eSIM, while the Mate 90 Pro Max supports four SIMs with three active standby connections.
The phones also include HarmonyOS AI features. On the Pro Max and higher models, Huawei uses a 30-billion-parameter mixture-of-experts model for on-device AI functions.
Features include Celia Memories for organizing content, context-aware suggestions through the Celia navigation bar, automated call answering, call summaries and real-time translation.
Celia Gallery Assistant can also help users edit photos through voice or text commands and generate videos.
Mate 90 RS ULTIMATE DESIGN
The Mate 90 RS ULTIMATE DESIGN sits at the top of the lineup. It features a redesigned Star Diamond camera module and Dynamic Lenticular Kunlun Glass.
The phone is available with an Ascending Texture finish in Red, White, and Black. It includes the Kirin 9050 Pro, Full-color Linglong Display, satellite communication features, and the advanced camera system found on the Pro Max.
