When fully unfolded, the device becomes a tall, continuous smartphone-style display with significantly more vertical screen space than any conventional foldable currently on the market. When folded shut, it does not resemble a book; it closes like a thicker version of a traditional clamshell flip phone, with the S-shaped fold stacking the three sections on top of each other.
This is a fundamentally different geometry from anything currently available. Existing trifold devices, including Huawei’s own Mate XT, which launched last year as the world’s first commercially available trifold, fold horizontally, expanding outward like a small tablet. Huawei’s new patent describes something that folds vertically, prioritising height over width.
Not a New Concept but a Giant Step Forward
The idea of a vertical trifold smartphone did not originate with Huawei. Infinix had already shown its ZERO Series Mini Tri-Fold concept, a vertical foldable AMOLED device designed to fold a normal-sized smartphone down into a very compact form, with a screen on one side and cameras on the back when closed. That concept was revealed in early 2025 and generated genuine interest as a glimpse of where foldable design could go.
But Infinix’s version remains exactly that, a concept, with no engineering roadmap, no patent details, and no confirmed path to commercial production. Huawei is now taking the same idea several steps further. Its patent filings cover sub-frame architecture, dual-hinge mechanics, antenna shielding systems, and signal interference solutions – the kind of specific, problem-solving engineering documentation that separates an idea from a device being actively developed. Where Infinix pointed at a direction, Huawei appears to be building a road.
The Engineering Behind It
The patent details a system composed of multiple sub-frames, a central chassis, flexible display layers, antenna components, and shielding elements. One of the more technically interesting disclosures is a dedicated baffle layer specifically designed to reduce signal interference when the device is folded, an acknowledgment that stacking three sections of a phone on top of each other creates new challenges for radio frequency performance that a standard single-fold device does not face.
Adding a second hinge does not simply double the complexity of a single-hinge design; it multiplies it. Each hinge must move in precise coordination with the other to avoid stressing the flexible display at either fold point. Heat dissipation becomes harder to manage with more internal structure packed into a smaller volume. Component placement, battery, processor, cameras, and antennas must be rethought entirely for a three-section chassis. Durability testing for two hinges across hundreds of thousands of fold cycles is a more demanding engineering challenge than any single-hinge device has required.
These are not insurmountable problems, Huawei has demonstrated with the Mate XT that multi-hinge foldables can reach commercial production, but they explain why this form factor has not yet appeared on the market despite the conceptual appeal being obvious.
Why Vertical, Specifically
The choice of a vertical trifold orientation rather than a horizontal one is not arbitrary; it reflects where mobile content consumption has moved.
The overwhelming majority of content consumed on smartphones today is vertical. TikTok, Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts, Threads, X, every major platform optimised for engagement in the last five years has converged on vertical video and vertical scrolling as its primary format. Standard smartphones are already designed around this orientation. Flip phones preserve it when unfolded.
A vertical trifold takes it further. A taller display means more content is visible at once, longer comment sections without scrolling, more of a video frame visible, and more lines of text before a swipe is needed. For users who primarily consume content in portrait orientation, a phone that is significantly taller when unfolded is a direct improvement in how that content is experienced, not simply a larger screen in absolute terms.
The multitasking angle is also meaningful. More vertical space allows two apps to be displayed simultaneously in a stacked layout without either feeling compressed, a use case that current foldables handle better in horizontal orientation, where the wider format creates more usable real estate for split-screen arrangements.
The Pura Connection
Huawei has not confirmed the device or assigned it a commercial name. But the patent’s design language appears to build on concepts introduced by the Huawei Pura X, the company’s wider take on the traditional clamshell foldable that pushed the format’s proportions in a new direction. If the vertical trifold concept reaches commercial production, the patent suggests it could debut as a member of the Pura family rather than the Mate line, where the existing Mate XT established Huawei’s horizontal trifold credentials.
That distinction matters for positioning. The Mate series has historically carried Huawei’s most technically ambitious hardware. The Pura family has leaned toward design innovation and photography. A vertical trifold that prioritises display geometry and content consumption over raw specifications fits the Pura identity more naturally.
The Standard Patent Caveat
As with all patent filings, there is no guarantee this device ever reaches consumers. Companies patent ideas constantly; some become products, many do not. The gap between a patent filing and a commercial launch involves materials science, manufacturing scale, price point decisions, and market timing, all of which can kill a concept that looks compelling on paper.
What the patent does confirm is that Huawei is actively thinking about vertical trifold mechanisms at a level of engineering detail that goes beyond early ideation. The specificity of the baffle layer, the sub-frame architecture, and the antenna shielding solutions described in the documents suggest a design team that has worked through real implementation challenges rather than simply filing a protective patent on a vague concept.

Infinix imagined the vertical trifold. Huawei is engineering it. That distinction, between concept and development, is what makes this patent significant. A taller display, a compact fold, two hinges working in coordination, and a form factor built for the way people actually consume content in 2026: if Huawei can bring this to market at a viable price point, it will not simply have a new phone to sell.
