IHC Launches Contempt Proceedings Against Leaked Personal Details of Justice Babar Sattar
In a recent development, Islamabad High Court (IHC) launched contempt proceedings over leaked personal details of Justice Babar Sattar. He wrote a letter to IHC Chief Justice Aamer Farooq regarding alleged interference in the judiciary. In the letter, Justice Sattar reportedly revealed that a ‘top official’ from the security establishment jeopardized him to back off from scrutinizing surveillance procedures in the audio leaks case.
Justice Sattar asserted:
“I paid no heed to such intimidation tactics… I did not consider that such messages risked causing substantial harm to the process of justice.”
Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani, in an order directed the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority, the cybercrime wing of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), the director general of the FIA, the director general of passports at the Bureau of Immigration of the FIA, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), the Federal Board of Revenue, heads of information technology/5G warfare wings of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), Intelligence Bureau, Military Intelligence and counter-terrorism department of the police, to provide all details on the online movement against Justice Sattar.
During the social media campaign, personal details about Justice Sattar were leaked to the public. It included copies of his Green Card, his passport, and his travel history. Even though details of his property holdings and other private information about his family members were also published. Justice Sattar termed their release a malicious campaign.
Justice Babar Sattar Writes Another Letter IHC CJ
Two hashtags “WillBabarSattarAnswer” and “Foreign Munsif Namanzoor” were used as part of this malicious campaign during which his personal information was leaked. The “Pakistan Lawyers Forum” account was also pinpointed as one of the key accounts part of the campaign.
Justice Kayani directed FIA’s cybercrime wing, heads of ISI, IB, MI, and counter-terrorism departments to independently get data on the hashtags. They have been directed to identify the accounts and plot the data for analysis of all tweets, retweets, users for each trending hashtag, duplicated content in tweets/retweets, identities of the original hashtag account owners, identities of five accounts with the largest number of tweets/retweets and period from the first tweet to the last before the hashtag became trending.
PEMRA was also directed to submit a report about the first, second, and third channels that got editorial approvals to run the information about Justice Sattar. Justice Kayani also asked for a report on how and through whom the traveling documents with photographs of the judge and his family were leaked. The court gave the authorities a week to submit their reports until May 21.
