Instagram Expands Algorithm Control Feature to Users Worldwide – How it Works?

Instagram has announced the global rollout of its “Your Algorithm” control feature for all English-speaking users. The option, which was first tested with a small group of users in October last year, gives people more influence over the content they see in their Reels feed.

Users can access this feature by tapping the slider icon located in the top-right corner of the Reels feed. From there, they can select or remove topics they are interested in. Instagram also allows users to view example videos for each topic, helping them better understand what type of content falls under specific categories.

The goal of this update is to offer users a clearer sense of control over their Reels experience. By choosing preferred topics, users may feel that the content they see better reflects their interests rather than being fully determined by Instagram’s algorithm.

However, there is some uncertainty around how widely this feature will be used. Instagram’s recommendation system plays a major role in driving user engagement, especially through AI-suggested Reels. Allowing users to manually influence their feed could, in theory, reduce overall engagement. That said, past experience suggests most users are unlikely to actively manage these settings. Many people appreciate having control options available, even if they never use them.

In practice, most users prefer a passive experience where they can open the app and start scrolling without making adjustments. As a result, this change will have a limited impact on overall Reels usage.

Looking ahead, Instagram is also planning to introduce another update in 2026 that will allow users to select three top interests for their Reels feed for the year. These selections will help guide the algorithm to better match individual preferences over time.

This move reflects a broader trend across social media platforms, particularly within Meta’s ecosystem. Facebook, Instagram, and Threads are all experimenting with ways to give users more control over what appears in their feeds.

While these changes may improve transparency and user trust, it remains unclear how much they will alter user behavior or public attitudes toward algorithm-driven content. Although offering manual controls is a step forward, algorithms will likely continue to play a central role in shaping online experiences.
