Instagram Invites Students to Join New Groups

Instagram is testing a new feature that allows students of college or university to join special groups. These groups are designated just for their schools.

According to CNBC it is an opt-in feature that lets users who go to the same school to see public Stories of each other and they can also send direct messages. Instagram shows whether a student goes to a given school using information publicly shared by the user, and their connections. It is not clear that where the feature is being tested and Instagram is also not ready for any comment.

Instagram Invites Students to Join University-Based Groups

Instagram is encouraging users to join a college community and connect with other students.

Instagram’s this recent move recalls us the roots of Facebook, which started at Harvard, and at the beginning it was limited only to universities.

In 2017, Mark Zuckerberg said that he hopes the company connects a billion people in meaningful groups, as part of Facebook’s mission to build community. It seems so clearly that Facebook wants to extend this philosophy to Instagram.

Instagram specifically wants to attract younger users. Instagram said that the test is in early phases and there are tools to report inappropriate usage.
