Instagram Lite Goes Live for Emerging Markets

Last week, Instagram achieved the milestone of 1 billion users, but for future growth it should find new markets. The company has already sensed it and for this purpose it is launching Instagram Lite, a slimmed down version of Instagram to meet the needs of those users who are living in countries where mobile coverage is patchy and data is expensive.

Facebook Launches Instagram Lite for Emerging Markets

Instagram Lite for Android has rolled out in the Google Play App Store without any announcement. This week it is available in Mexico and will soon expand to other countries. The Instagram Lite app is small, users can download it quickly and it saves space.

A spokesperson for Instagram said the new app:

“We are testing a new version of Instagram for Android that takes up less space on your device, uses less data, and starts faster.”

The Instagram lite size is only 573 kilobytes which is very tiny. The Instagram app on iOS is 246 times bigger at 141 megabytes. Users can post photos and share and view stories on the Instagram photos, but some features are currently not available, such as posting videos and direct messaging between users.

Instagram might or might not release these features, depending on its trial’s results.
