IT Minister Justifies Online Surveillance & Denies Ongoing Internet Issues

The recent IT committee meeting witnessed intense discussions on internet outages, online surveillance, and its impact on industries in Pakistan. Minister of State for IT & Telecom, Shaza Fatima Khawaja, defended the governmentโ€™s stance, asserting that internet disruptions were temporary and had been resolved.

โ€œOur entire security paradigm is changing,โ€ stated Shaza Fatima, emphasizing the rising threat of terrorism. She mentioned the loss of more than 100 soldiers in the past month and argued for the necessity of targeted surveillance. โ€œI agree that there should not be unnecessary surveillance on citizens. However, where necessary, we have to conduct surveillance,โ€ she said.

Moreover, Shaza dismissed concerns over ongoing internet issues, citing a $1.5 billion export figure from the previous month. โ€œIf the internet is down, where is this revenue coming from?โ€ she asked. The minister further stated that the Chairman of PASHA confirmed no industry is currently facing internet-related problems. She also mentioned ongoing discussions with Starlink about introducing satellite internet in Pakistan.

Another committee member, Romina Khurshid Alam also supported the need for surveillance. Monitoring happens worldwide. โ€œIf something is happening against the state, it should be monitored. Even cartoons are monitored in foreign countries. We come to standing committees to strengthen the country,โ€ she said.

However, Shazaโ€™s remarks brought criticism from key government ally, Pakistan Peopleโ€™s Party (PPP) leader Sharmila Farooqi, who expressed frustration over the ministerโ€™s remarks. โ€œI am very disappointed. Four meetings have been held, and no solution has been reached,โ€ said Sharmila. She claimed that the e-commerce sector, including her husbandโ€™s company, faced significant losses due to internet shutdowns. โ€œEither we are lying, or the government is lying,โ€ she added.

Our Opinion

While the ministerโ€™s emphasis on national security and technological advancements is admirable, concerns raised by stakeholders, highlight a gap between policy implementation and ground realities. Internet shutdowns have undeniable economic repercussions, especially for the e-commerce sector. Transparency, proactive communication, and stakeholder engagement are crucial to addressing these challenges and ensuring a balanced approach that safeguards both national security and economic growth.
