KP Launches Personalized Registration Number System for Vehicle Owners

The government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) has launched a new digital service called the Personalized Registration Mark System (PRM). Chief Minister Muhammad Sohail Afridi formally announced the system and declared it a major step toward modernizing vehicle registration. Under this new service, vehicle registration numbers will no longer be tied to the vehicle. Instead, the number will legally belong to the individual owner.

This initiative changes a long-standing practice in which number plates were transferred with vehicles at the time of sale. Through PRM, citizens will now hold permanent ownership of their selected vehicle number, much like their identity card or mobile number. This change creates convenience and greater control for citizens over their registered identity.

One of the key benefits of the new system is number retention. If a vehicle is sold, the previous owner will retain the registration number and will not need to pay an additional fee for keeping it. The buyer, on the other hand, will apply separately for a new number plate. Citizens will also have the option to keep their selected number inactive for up to three years, even if they do not have a vehicle at that time.

According to the Chief Minister, this shift will bring transparency and efficiency into the registration system. He stated that the new digital structure will make processes faster, more secure, and free from corruption. The PRM system is expected to eliminate the use of fake number plates and reduce vehicle cloning, a practice where multiple vehicles carry identical plates for illegal activities.

PRM will also play an important role in improving law enforcement processes. Clear ownership tracking will assist in tracing vehicles used in unlawful activities and will help reduce the misuse of transport assets. Because the number plate becomes personal identity, accountability becomes easier, and record handling becomes more reliable.

Chief Minister Sohail Afridi further directed the Excise Department to move towards a complete online registration system. He highlighted that citizens should be able to apply, track requests, and receive updates digitally without visiting government offices. This digital shift aims to save time, reduce paperwork, and increase public accessibility.

The launch of the PRM system represents a broader commitment by the government to introduce technology-based reforms.
