Lawmakers Question Mobile Service Shutdowns in KP’s Lakki Marwat Over Security Concerns

The Senate Standing Committee on Information Technology and Telecom, chaired by Senator Palwasha Khan, raised concerns on Tuesday over repeated mobile service shutdowns in the Lakki Marwat district, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, citing both security and public safety implications.
During the session, Senator Ata-ur-Rehman criticized the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority’s (PTA) response to service disruptions, calling it “unsatisfactory.” He highlighted that shutting down mobile networks under the pretext of security threats could, paradoxically, provide additional protection to terrorists. “If an attack occurs in my district, how would I make an urgent call or send a message?” he questioned.
Chairman PTA clarified that decisions to suspend mobile services are made according to government policy, while Federal Minister Shiza Fatima emphasized that such shutdowns have negative economic impacts and are implemented only when necessary. She added that the Ministry of Interior advises which areas require internet or mobile service restrictions based on security considerations.
“Whenever the Ministry of Interior issues instructions, we must comply, which sometimes limits the Ministry of IT and PTA’s options,” Fatima noted. She reassured the committee that authorities strive to minimize service disruptions and limit the impact on ordinary citizens.
The discussion highlighted the delicate balance between national security and public convenience, emphasizing the need for transparent policies and timely communication with affected residents. Lawmakers urged PTA and relevant ministries to explore alternative security measures that ensure connectivity while maintaining safety.
