LHC Makes Biometric Verification Mandatory for Legal Proceedings

The Lahore High Court (LHC) has taken an important step toward improving the judicial process by making biometric verification mandatory for court proceedings. According to a notification issued on January 9, 2026, all petitioners, respondents, and other parties involved in cases must complete biometric verification before their cases can be heard. This decision was approved by Chief Justice Aalia Neelum and formally announced by the Additional Registrar (Judicial).

Under the new policy, biometric verification will be carried out through the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA). It will apply to individuals who file petitions, submit surety bonds, or provide written replies and statements in court. The notification clearly states that no judicial proceedings will move forward unless biometric verification is completed. This rule will come into effect from January 20, 2026. Also, it will apply to the Lahore High Court as well as all its benches.

Judicial authorities have explained that the main purpose of this initiative is to bring greater transparency to court proceedings. In recent years, courts have faced issues related to fake, forged, or fraudulent petitions. By linking court processes with biometric data, the LHC aims to ensure that only genuine individuals are involved in legal cases. This step is expected to reduce misuse of the legal system and help courts function more efficiently.

Biometric verification will also help in accurately identifying parties involved in a case. This is particularly important in matters related to surety bonds and statements, where false identities can cause delays or injustice. With this system in place, courts will be able to verify identities quickly and reliably, saving time for both judges and litigants.

In addition to the Lahore High Court, a similar decision has been taken for district courts across Punjab. Another notification issued on the same day makes biometric verification mandatory for all parties before filing cases in district courts. This decision was also approved by Chief Justice Aalia Neelum and formally issued by the Director General of the District Judiciary.

This new rule shows that the judiciary is serious about implementing reforms across the entire justice system. By standardizing identity verification, courts aim to create a more secure and trustworthy environment for legal proceedings. It will also help prevent impersonation and ensure accountability of all parties involved.

While the new requirement may initially require some adjustment from lawyers and litigants, it is expected to bring long-term benefits. A more transparent and efficient judicial process will strengthen public confidence in the legal system. Overall, the introduction of mandatory biometric verification marks a significant move toward modernizing court procedures and improving the delivery of justice in Punjab.
