MCI Issues Notices to Operators for Illegal Telecom Towers

Directorate of Municipal Administration of the Metropolitan Corporation Islamabad (MCI) has launched a drive against unauthorized mobile towers and those installed on rooftops without proper security measures. MCI Issues Notices to Operators for Illegal Telecom Towers.

DMA Issues Notices to Operators for Illegal Telecom Towers and asked them to provide legal information. MCI has ordered the cellular companies either to fulfill criteria or remove their towers from residential and commercial areas.

DMA has asked for information regarding NOC’s, GPS site code, GPS coordinates, BTS site color and Host name.

Assistant Director DMA, Karamatillah Khan said:

24 dry batteries of cellular towers have been confiscated while 90 sites where illegal towers were installed were also sealed

According to survey carried by MCI, total 517 telecom towers are operating in Islamabad. DMA has recovered 180 million pending dues from different telecom operators.

Karamatillah told that most of the cellular towers are installed in residential areas and rooftops without safety measures. Such towers can cause harmful incident in extreme weather situations.

He explained that:

When the dry batteries of telecom towers were confiscated, concerned companies came and questioned why the DMA had removed their batteries, then they were asked to submit their dues and till now 180 million has been recovered

In July 2016, two telecom towers installed on rooftops near residential area collapsed in Islamabad. However no causality was reported. Mobile tower radiations also caused cancer and other minor diseases so it should be installed far away.

MCI Emergency and Disaster Management has asked PTA to take serious action against the radiation spread by these mobile towers.
