Microsoft Introduces First Preview of Skype for the Universal Windows 10 App

Microsoft and Skype users observed a change nine months ago by exterminating its Metro-style Skype app for a change.

The modification worked differently for desktop, mobile and tablet users. Desktop users were allowed to use the existing Win32 app. While mobile and tablet users, were allowed to use series of decoupled Skype apps, for messaging and video.

On March 24, Microsoft again announced its updated Skype-related change of plans reunifying Skype calling, messaging, video in new Universal Windows 10 app. Microsoft with an aim to release a version of its unified Skype Universal Windows Platform (UWP) app to  Windows 10. Ultimately, the app is going to replace the current unified Win32 Skype desktop application. Now the major question is about the availability of the app. On this query a spokesperson of Microsoft replied that;

“The Skype UWP app will be available to consumers via the Windows Store as part of a future Windows 10 update”

Although, Microsoft is still planning to continue making of the three separate Skype apps which involves messaging, calling and video.  Users can get these apps at Windows 10. On this the Director of Product Marketing for Skype said;

“For small screens — mobile users who have apps for each task — integrated apps work really well. For laptops and desktops, the story is quite a bit different.”

For the ease of observers, Microsoft execs provided some information about what will be in the coming UWP version of Skype for Windows 10. Some of the Version 1 features on the list:

  • Ability to sign in with Microsoft account and link a Skype ID
  • Simplified look and feel, thanks to removal of duplicate menus
  • Global menus to be in a new single settings menu
  • Make one-to-one calls and send messages
  • Send photos
  • See notifications for incoming calls and messages outside of the app
  • Participate in existing group chats

Metro apps only usable in  the full screen Metro environment, though Windows 10 will be free Metro apps from this constraint.The new integrated providing support for group messaging, group voice, video calls, screen and file sharing is giving a big smile on the users and will surely put a positive impact on both Microsoft and Skype users.
