Microsoft Reportedly Canceled Three Halo Projects During Studio Overhaul

Microsoft reportedly canceled three Halo projects that were in development before major layoffs hit the studio formerly known as 343 Industries. Details about the canceled games have now emerged, giving fans a look at what the future of the popular franchise could have looked like.
According to reports from insider RebsGaming and The Verge, the studio had been working on three separate Halo projects at the same time. These included a new mainline game, a smaller title based on the Halo novel First Strike, and updated versions of classic Halo games.

The First Strike project was reportedly the most advanced of the three. The game was planned as a smaller experience set between the events of the first and second Halo games.
The project was expected to feature five story missions along with a Firefight mode. It was also reportedly designed to connect planned remakes of Halo 2 and Halo 3. If development had continued, the game could have arrived as early as next year.
Another team was working on an early concept for a full-fledged Halo 7. The project was still far from entering full production, but developers had reportedly prepared a new vision for the game.
The new concept included a fresh story campaign, player-versus-player multiplayer and cooperative player-versus-environment gameplay. Developers were also reportedly planning an expanded version of Halo’s Forge creation tool.
The team presented this updated vision to Xbox leadership, including Matt Booty, before the layoffs. However, Halo 7 remained in the early stages of development, meaning the game was still several years away from release.
The third project reportedly involved updated versions of older Halo games. Details about the remastered titles remain limited, but the project was part of the studio’s broader plans for the franchise.

The development of all three projects was disrupted by major layoffs at the studio. Following the cuts, only around 30 employees reportedly remained. The remaining staff included key engineers, artists, and support workers.
The studio has since moved away from its previous role as the primary developer of Halo games. It was renamed Halo Studios and shifted toward a support-focused role within Microsoft’s wider gaming operations.
The cancellation of these projects could mark a major change in Microsoft’s approach to the Halo franchise. While the series remains an important Xbox property, the reported shift suggests that Microsoft is taking a different approach to future Halo development.
For now, there is limited information about when fans can expect the next major Halo game. The canceled projects show that several different ideas were being explored behind the scenes before the studio’s restructuring changed the direction of the franchise.
