Minister Admits X Ban not an Appreciable Move

Pakistan has faced a number of social media bans in the past years. Even now, the popular social media platform X (formerly Twitter) has been inaccessible in the country for more than 2 months. On the other hand, while talking to a media outlet, Federal Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said that he was not in favor of banning any social media platform.

Moreover, he asked why the social media platforms did not open any sub-office in Pakistan, although the government took steps to facilitate them. He said that social media companies should set up their offices in Pakistan like they did in other countries of the world.

He confessed that the suspension of “X” (formerly Twitter) was not an appreciable move, but the government had to take the step as the banned terrorist outfit, Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) had an extensive setup on X.

The minister also emphasized the need that there should be a comprehensive mechanism to regulate social media in the country. Moreover, he added that the country had a law against defamation, however, the problem rested with the execution of this law.
