Mobile SIMs on Expired or Invalid CNICs Face Blocking Under PTA Rules
Mobile SIMs on expired or invalid CNICs may face blocking under PTA rules unless users update records promptly.
Mobile SIMs registered against expired, cancelled, or invalid identity cards may be suspended or blocked under regulatory rules, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has warned.
The telecom regulator has launched a public awareness campaign advising mobile users to renew their computerized national identity cards before expiry and update their records with their respective mobile operators to avoid service disruption.
According to the PTA, mobile numbers linked with inactive, cancelled, or expired CNICs issued by the National Database and Registration Authority may face suspension if the identity document is no longer valid or verifiable.
The authority said only SIMs registered on valid and verifiable identity documents will remain active. Users who fail to renew their CNICs on time or do not update their details after renewal may face blocking or suspension of mobile services.
The PTA has also clarified that renewing the CNIC alone may not be enough. After receiving a renewed identity card, users should update their information in the records of their relevant mobile company so that SIM registration details remain accurate.
The advisory is important for millions of mobile users, as SIM registration is directly linked to identity verification. Mobile services including calls, SMS, mobile internet, mobile banking, and other digital services can be affected if a SIM is suspended.
Users whose CNICs have already expired, or are close to expiry, have been advised to complete the renewal process through NADRA and then visit their mobile operator’s franchise or customer service center to update their SIM ownership details.
The regulator said the move is aimed at maintaining accurate telecom subscriber records, preventing misuse of mobile connections, and ensuring that mobile numbers remain linked to verified users.
Mobile users are therefore advised not to ignore CNIC expiry dates, as failure to renew and update records may result in disruption of mobile services.
